Periodontology

What you should know about periodontal gum diseases.

Periodontal gum diseases, including gingivitis and periodontitis, are serious infections, and if left untreated, they  can lead to the loss of your teeth. The main cause of periodontal disease is bacterial plaque, a sticky, colorless film that is growing on the teeth. Others factors can also affect the health of your gums, aming which :

  • Smoking, genetics (30 % of the population is currently concerned)
  • Puberty, pregnancy, diabetes and other systemic diseases
  • Poor nutrition, obesity, medication or stress can leave your dental situation in a disorder.

Gingivitis is the mildest form of periodontal diseases.

What are the symptoms ? Your gums become red, swollen, and tend to bleed easily. There is usually a little or no discomfort at this stage. Gingivitis is often caused by a poor oral hygiene and is reversible with professional treatment and good dental home care.

Untreated gingivitis can lead to periodontitis. With time, the plaque can spread and grow below the gum line. Toxins produced by the bacteria in the plaque will then irritate the gums and stimulate a chronic inflammatory response, where the body turns against itself and the bone tissue that supports the teeth is progressively destroyed. Gums tend to separate from the teeth, forming pockets (spaces between the teeth and gums) that become infected. As the disease progresses, the pockets deepen and more gum tissue and bone tissue is damaged and destroyed. This process can have very serious symptoms. Teeth can become loose and might have to be removed.

What can Dental Clinic Zlata Prague ™ offer you to treat these diseases ?

Dental Clinic Zlata Prague ™ is here to help you avoid an invasive surgical treatments as much as possible. We would rather recommend a non surgical treatment - scaling and root planning (a careful cleaning of the root surfaces to remove plaque and calculus  from deep periodontal pockets, and to smooth the roots of the teeth to remove bacterial toxins), with a local delivery of antimicrobials and host modulation.

We also provide a unique deep dental leaning, very soft, careful and efficient, done with our specific equipment, called Vector Durr.
It is painless, not damageable for your gum and certainly the most effective.

The complete procedure takes 2 to 3 hours and can be done within 2 visits. You can observe the achieved result at the X-Rays image below :

According to the local treatment we will make a test to decide what kind of bacterial infection has grown inside the formed gingival and periodontal pockets, as well as a test to find the adequate medication, with your approval, to fight against this infection. Then we will prescribe you a suitable treatment. After this phase, regular check-ups will be a necessity to follow up on your recovery.

However, in severe cases, we will be forced to proceed with a surgical treatment. A surgical treatment is necessary only if the bone supporting your teeth was already entirely destroyed. It enables to reverse some of the damage by regenerating lost bone tissue.

During this procedure, our Surgeon will fold back the gum tissue and remove the bacteria causing the disease. Membranes (filters), bone grafts or tissue-stimulating proteins can be used in the process to encourage your body's natural ability to regenerate bone and tissue.
